Battlestar Galactica Season 3 DVDs?

I just finished watching Battlestar Galactica seasons 1 and 2 via Netflix. The show is currently in the middle of season 3, so if I want to keep watching via netflix I will have to wait a while. Season 2 was released on DVD in 2 batches (season “2.0″, and season “2.5″). If season 3 is released in the same way, then I’ll only have a couple months to wait, which is fine. But if not, I’ll have to wait a looong time before I can get my BSG on again, and I’m not willing to do that.

Googling around, I couldn’t even find any season 3 DVD rumors, so I’m pretty much concluding that it won’t be split up into 2 DVD sets like season 2 was.

I guess I’ll itunes it ($35). It’s cheaper than actually buying the DVDs, but of course so much more expensive than watching via Netflix. But if it was the old days (pre ~2004), I wouldn’t even have the option of quickly and easily catching up on a current season of a television show. So i guess I won’t complain.

I did that with 24. I heard Battlestar Gallactica was kickass — it’s deadly when you have whole season’s worth of DVDs and haven’t watched any of it. I might have to wait until I can take some time off

um, bit torrent anybody?

Posted by Anonymous on 5 February 2007 @ 2pm

Isn’t that illegal? :-P

Posted by Anonymous on 14 February 2007 @ 7am

not necessarily… televison shows are trickier than movies when it comes to copyright laws. It’s illegal to distribute the tv show online via torrents or any other method, but downloading it for personal use from an illegal source doesn’t make it illegal for you unless you in turn distribute it. This is a carry-over that originally only applied to making VHS recordings of television shows legal.

BSG is the best thing on TV with out a doubt.

I’m in the UK so i’ll probably have to wait a long time for the DVD…i know it’s on TV at the moment, but i’ve been avioding it (aswell as lost season 3) like the plague. Rather go without for a while than watch over 15 mins of adverts every episode.

I would download it but i live in rural scotland where you can’t get broadband…!

I am having the same problem. I watched the first and second dvd’s from Nexflix in a few weeks. I can’t believe I never saw it before. It is the best show I have ever seen. If you find out where to get season 3, let me know. Season 3 was already half way thru when I finished 2.5. I can’t wait to see what happens with the cylons.

Check the Itunes site. You can download the episodes pretty affordably.

ok… so i just finished watching season 2 when i’m suppose to be studying for the lsat. there’s no way i’m going to be able to focus with this kind of cliff-hanger. i NEED season 3!!! does anyone know when it comes on the sci-fi channel so i could get a friend to start tivo-ing it for me. i don’t know if i can wait until august for the whole season to come out.

Robin Parrish was the first to let us know about a posting at Bear McCreary’s (composer for Battlestar Galactica) blog which mentions the third season DVD release:

“Next month, I’m in the studio working on the Battlestar Galactica Season 3 soundtrack album (which will definitely have All Along the Watchtower on it!). Our release date will be mid-August, to coincide with the DVD release”

Posted by Mike M on 26 May 2007 @ 6pm

I found a site stating that the final Season 3 DVD release date is September 2nd 2007. I guess we’ll have to w8 all summer

Posted by Anonymous on 26 May 2007 @ 7pm

We (my boyfriend and I) just finished watching 2.5 – we rented everything so far from Netflix and watched the mini-series on in less than 2 weeks. We’ve been checking the mail like addicts and are despaerately seeking any news about the relaese of season 3. Hopefully the August date is accurate, but even that is so far away . . .

Posted by Kim on 3 June 2007 @ 8pm

For the meantime, if you want to watch Season 3 in its entirety, no commercials, check out http://www.tv-links.co.uk You can stream all the episodes from there by going to the Battlestar Galactica link (not BSG 1978 obviously). Hope they get to work on releasing S3 on time, watching it on a computer monitor isn’t the same as watching it on the couch with surround sound.

September 2, 2007 is a Sunday. Aren’t DVDs usually released on Tuesdays?

Posted by no name on 30 June 2007 @ 5pm

Yes, I work at Blockbuster, and DVDs are released on Tuesdays 99.999999…% of the time. I’ve worked there for about 6 years, and I’ve only seen maybe 5 movies or less come out on a day other than Tuesday, and those days were Friday and maybe even Monday. Sunday is not an option. Also, I did a search on the show today in our database, and no release date could be found. TV shows show up in our system differently from actual theatrical movies, which means it could come out, but it will likely be more than a a month, at least.

Posted by Matt on 13 July 2007 @ 5pm

no name & Matt: I found the same website with the 9/2/2007 release date for Season 3. Its an overseas release for Region 2, the UK I believe.

Posted by Scott G on 2 August 2007 @ 6am

I was at the BSG panel at Comic Con this weekend and I think they said it would be out “in time for christmas” I also noteced the region two has a realease date of 9/2 and in the past we have gotten 5 to 8 months after region one.

Posted by bri on 3 August 2007 @ 3pm

To Mike M and all. I have also seen the post about the release of the soundtrack to coinside with the dvd (R1). I just went to Bear McCreary’s website and the release date for the soundtrack now says October 2007. This is pure torture, might have to purchase from itunes afterall.

Posted by Tricia on 7 August 2007 @ 10pm

I just watched the first 2 seasons from Netflix also, and I’m pretty upset to realize season 3 is coming out on DVD in England Sept. 3rd, or something like that, but not in the U.S. They haven’t even announced a U.S. release date. What’s the deal with that? I’d like to have it by Septemer 3rd also, so why can’t we?

Also, I found out the Sci-fi channel had a season 3 marathon earlier this month, but I just missed it. Oh well. DVD watchers usually can’t stand commercials anyway, and we don’t want held to certain times to watch shows!

Does anyone know yet when it will be released in the U.S. so we can rent it? And why is season 4 not staring until 2008?

The Cylons…

Posted by No 13 on 27 August 2007 @ 12am

I checked at BestBuy yesturday(9/1/07) the guy couldnt even pull up a release date… Nothin :(

Battlestar Season 3 will not be released in the United States till January 2008. However its released in the United Kingdom Sep 3rd 2007. The reason is because its alot more popular over in the UK than in the U.S. Its fosale on amazon.co.uk for 30.99 pounds. Thats roughly $70.00 dollars US.

Posted by Chris on 2 September 2007 @ 9pm

Battlestar is really popular just not in the US. Im a huge fan. BSG Season 3 is for sale in Australlia and the UK. Buy on Amazon, its the cheepist I could find on UK websites.

Posted by Chris on 2 September 2007 @ 9pm

From what I’ve heard, they are deliberately waiting until near the 4th season premier, with the hope that marketing the DVDs and season 4 together will help both. This seems to be a common strategy for TV shows now – and a really annoying one. It means that for those of us who discovered a show recently and having been renting or buying DVDs to catch-up, we will have at most a couple of weeks to watch the whole seaon. Granted with something like Battlestar, watching a season in a week is no problem. Still, it would be nice if they helped new viewers catch-up. Also, renting from netflix or blockbuster gets tricky if the show is popular (especially if everyone wants it for that 2 week window between release and new season). I for one won’t watch the new season if I haven’t had time to catch-up with the DVDs. And I’m sure many longtime viewers would like to see the episodes again (and not necessarily in a short marathon) to review for the new season.

Posted by Ryan on 2 September 2007 @ 10pm

It’s not on sale anywhere only on download. Not sure why it’s not coming out sooner.

Posted by Jeff on 4 September 2007 @ 5pm

So is it possible to buy it from Amazon UK and play it here in the States?

Posted by Joe on 4 September 2007 @ 7pm

Yeah will the UK version work here in the US?

Posted by Hooked on BSG on 6 September 2007 @ 4pm

UK and Australia are PAL. America is NTSC. You can get a PAL converting DVD player to playback PAL DVDs on your NTSC TV, but we all might as well just for the discs that will play in our North American players.

I just bought the original miniseries, Season 1, Season 2.0, and Season 2.5 myself. All came yesterday and am going to try and watch it all leading up to Season 3′s release so I can really enjoy Season 4. Wow, what a dork!

Well, BSG rules. Simple.

Posted by Not a Toaster on 8 September 2007 @ 8pm

Darn… Jan 08 is a long while to wait for the dvd release. Oh well… :(

Posted by sam on 10 September 2007 @ 2pm

can ANYONE tell me when the release for Season 3 will be. Talk about a dork. Cahmm mmon Imm feinnen hearr.

Posted by rayscolly on 11 September 2007 @ 6pm

ok …I see Jan…….08 did not read the above blog
MMaannnnnnnnn!

Posted by rayscolly on 11 September 2007 @ 6pm

Jan 08 is when Season 4 begins airing. Season 3 DVD should definitely be before that being that the UK has already got theirs out.

Posted by Not a Toaster on 12 September 2007 @ 12am

man this sucks, BSG is an American show, filmed here, produced here so why isnt it season 3 released HERE first! its our show we should get first grabbs at it, this sucks. Reason why season 4 isnt airing til Jan 08 is because it will only be a 13 episode season, like season 1. which sucks also! I like a good 24 to 26 episode season because it allows character build up.
by the way i build studio scale 22 inch vipers! http://www.starshipmodeling.com

Posted by cyloncmdr on 14 September 2007 @ 11am

Well the January 08 release really blows, that coupled with Season 4 being the last for BSG really takes the wind outta one’s sails. On the upside though I’m reading that S4 will have 22 episodes, not the 13 you mention aboove …there’s also the Pegasus mini-piece thats gonna be done and a couple double episodes. So the final year should be an excellent one. SE

Posted by guardian1 on 15 September 2007 @ 9am

Update. Season 4 may start a little later than January apparently.

Also, what cyloncmdr is referring to, is Season 4 is now rumored to be presented like Season 2, which is to say, Season 4.0 and Season 4.5 with 4.5 not completing until 2009.

And it breaks down like this. Season 4 = 22 episodes, true, however 2 episodes will be for Razor, the miniseries airing in Nov. Then S4.0 is 10 episodes and S4.5 is the final 10 episodes.

I read this in the BSG forums on SciFi.com and the fanbase is furious, to say the least. I can’t blame them. NBC/Universal put us through a rough hiatus already. The break up of Season 4 is just frakkin’ criminal. I could handle a brief break, but they aren’t talking brief at all.

Posted by Not a Toaster on 15 September 2007 @ 6pm

you meant the hottest show on tv is calling it quits after season 4?????????????? why??? its really the only show they got going for them!! the killed SG1 and now atlantis will suffer the same hatchet because you know they are trying to increase its ratings by signing on Amanda Tapping as a regular, is scifi channel knows anything about tv is they shouldnt cut there #1 show, silly i say, silly.

Posted by cyloncmdr on 15 September 2007 @ 11pm

This most definitely sucks ***. When companies do crap like this, keep silent and keep delaying for ridiculous amounts of time for no reason and without explanation, people get fed up and just don’t buy it. I will likely be one of those many people downloading it from a free site, instead of waiting for an additional 1-2 years while they sit with their thumb up their ***…

Posted by me3 on 17 September 2007 @ 4pm

Is there a place where fans can complain regarding the late release of season 3 dvd’s? Perhaps if enough people complain, they may release the season 3 dvd’s sooner.

Posted by sam on 18 September 2007 @ 9am

So, we have to wait until Jan 08 (at least) before the release…

Sci-Fi needs new corporate management. Remember Farscape? Damn sad, they way they treat the viewers.

Posted by cat on 18 September 2007 @ 3pm

I hate to keep dropping the bad news, but the latest insult is the Season 3 DVDs are now not coming out until SPRING ’08:

http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2288148

But wait! A tiny, shining light of hope: “Caprica” a prequel to BSG, is moving back to the front burner as a possible miniseries.

Posted by Not a Toaster on 20 September 2007 @ 1am

im glad i got the uk version…

Posted by Joe on 21 September 2007 @ 7am

I wanted to thank the person who left the TV-Links URL. However, it ended up providing access to only the first 22 minutes of each episode (even less on about three) and that included the full opening sequence each time. I may decide to spring for the $1.99 to Amazon for four or five of the eps with the release now being so late. It was something I was hoping to be able to put on my Christmas list.

Posted by Anastashia on 30 September 2007 @ 12pm

I think the Spring ’08 is just a rumor too. Until I see an official release date from SciFi / Universal, I don’t believe any of these dates. No need to get upset until you see the actual release date. *shrug*

Who knows. I hope it’s sooner than later for Season 3 DVD.

Posted by Starhopper on 3 October 2007 @ 2pm

release date is November, just before Battlestar Galacica Razor premiers

Posted by Anonymous on 19 October 2007 @ 1pm

To comment on something cyloncmdr posted earlier, BSG is actually filmed in Canada…Vancouver to be exact…in the same studio as the new Bionic Woman.

But I do agree, that waiting FOR EV-ER to release season three is stupid. They didn’t wait that long for the other seasons, so why now. I think one reason it’s not ‘as popular’ in the U.S. is because it’s on Scifi channel which is a channel that in all actuality isn’t that popular in the mainstream :\

The reason the show is ending is because of the cost it takes to produce the show. It’s more expensive to make than what they get for the show :( Again, chalking that up in the U.S. for it being on a channel that is not a part of the mainstream. What’s ironic is that the DVD sales for these in the U.S. are actually quite strong.

*sigh* Oh well, another great show killed due to stupidity on studio execs :(

Posted by Anonymous on 21 October 2007 @ 9pm

You can order Season 3 on Ebay: They have legal copies from down under in Sydney, Australia. Mmmmmm: Why release there first? And make us wait till spring??

Posted by west mcdonald on 22 October 2007 @ 12pm

Hey…Canada IS in America…the continent of NORTH AMERICA!

Posted by Anonymous on 4 November 2007 @ 4pm

wait, does the australian version work in a regular dvd player? Also, does anybody use their ps3 as a dvd player? I do, and wondered if it might have the capability to play dvds from UK and the like. Whatya think guys?

Posted by cinciguy7 on 5 November 2007 @ 2pm

Also, in regards to release dates, we all know this is about business. And, a studio will always ignore the serious fans and try to maximize the mainstream audience, since scifi fans are generally very committed and will stay with the show no matter how much the network fraks with us.

Posted by cinciguy7 on 5 November 2007 @ 2pm

Maybe I will invite the cast over for a picnic and film it! We can call it the last supper of BSG!

Posted by randy on 18 November 2007 @ 11pm

If anyone hears any official word on when season 3 will be available in the US can you let us know over at the BSG Wiki (http://www.battlestargalactica-wiki.com)? Seems to be nothing but rumors and hearsay so far.

Thanks!

Posted by Jeremy on 26 November 2007 @ 5pm

The BSG season 3 DVD works in region 2 and 4 … North American is region 1. Safe thing to do is to get a region free player. I can’t wait anymore … going to get BSG3 from ebay.

Posted by webcraaawler on 2 December 2007 @ 1am

BSG is NOT just an American show. More than half are Canadian, and the show is filmed in Vancouver BC Canada,
Sadly i think that they ARE waiting for season 4 start date to release season 3 DVD.
Pretty silly to not release for Christmas IMO.

Posted by Rob on 4 December 2007 @ 10am

Should I watch ‘Razor’ before season 3?

Posted by andy on 4 December 2007 @ 6pm

No, Razor comes between Season 3 and Season 4.

Posted by John on 4 December 2007 @ 7pm

ok i just sat down and watched Battlestar Galactica Razor and i loved it. which frustrates me because I’m fracking pissed off because i haven’t been able to see season 3 yet and i can’t find out when its going to be released on dvd which i have been waiting on for some time now. I can’t even download the season on i tunes. I need a date so i can sleep better at night. at least lost gave you a release date on season 3 all i’m asking is for a release date is that so hard.

Posted by Mike on 6 December 2007 @ 7pm

This sucks. I bought Season 3 on iTunes only to find that my video card does’nt work with Quicktime (thanks Vista). Then I find out that Season 3 is going be be shown again on SciFi. I set my Tivo to record all of them but all the shows were scrambled. It was strange becasue the commercials came in fine, it was just the actual show that was messed up. Anyone else on DirecTV have this problem? I think it’s just not meant to be. I’ll wait for the eventual DVD release and hope that season 4 comes out OK on my Tivo. By the way, if you finished Season 2.5 watch Razor. It backtracks to when Lee Adama takes over the Pegasus. Great 2 hours!

Posted by Kev on 8 December 2007 @ 2am

John, Razor takes place during season 2.5 not between 3 and 4. That is just the non flashback stuff and actually starts at Admiral Cain’s funeral. The flashback material is two time periods. First shows what happens with the Pegasus after the start of the attack. Second is during the first cylon war where you see a young William Adama as a Viper pilot and Cain as a teenager.

Posted by Brian on 23 December 2007 @ 4pm

I played a mean trick on a friend of mine. I got him hooked on BSG and then told him that the show will is no longer going to be made after season 4. Now he is as miserable as me!

Posted by LOL on 26 December 2007 @ 5pm

Hey. I just gave a one star “protest” review to season 3 on Amazon. If everyone does this with an explanation why, we might be able to grease the corporate wheels and finally get a release date. It’s time to take these jerks down. If Ghandi owned a DVD player, he would have done the same thing. Jesus too. Come on, just do it!

Posted by Sean on 30 December 2007 @ 10pm

The thing that pisses me off is that the studio that will eventually release this dvd set knows that the show is so popular that they can basically release it whenever they want and still make a ton of money, so basically there is no incentive on their part to hurry up and release it, they can just sit back and take their sweet, sweet time.

I’m very angry about the delay but I know when it finally comes out I will probably be the first one at the store slapping my money down on the counter. Then, because of the delay, and my frustration, unless season 3 is damn good, I’m afraid my enjoyment of it will be tainted.

I don’t know, I am kind of sad that the show is ending after Season 4 but I am hoping that that means season 4 will be released on dvd in a MUCH more timely manner. I wish the Sci-Fi Channel would put out their dvd releases more quickly, but as I said, apparently they, like some others in Hollywood, have money to burn.

Posted by Nelson on 31 December 2007 @ 1pm

So…by reading these posts backwards…I still cannot figure out whether to watch “Razor”…if I’ve only seen season 1-2. I love the series and do not want to watch out of order…help? Only the facts Jack…

Posted by Jeffrey Kinart on 1 January 2008 @ 5pm

Yes, you can watch Razor.

The time frame in which it’s “present day” scenes takes place is in the sometime in the second season in the first days of Lee “Apollo” Adama command of the battlestar Pegasus. It then uses flashbacks to cronicles the events of Admiral Helena Cain’s command of the Pegasus from momments before the cylon attack on the colonies and through to the time the Pegasus found the battlestar Galactica and it’s civilian fleet. It shows the events surrounding the stories and rumors of the Pegasus and her commander’s actions after the cylon attacks told to the Galactica crew in season two. Also it tells the role of the Pegasus version of the cylon model Six played during this time.

The movie is in essence the first episodes of the fourth season designed to set up the upcomming storylines of the series. However there are no real season three spoilers for you, nor will you be lost and not understand the story having missed the third season. Though watching it will help you understand a few things things about the third season better.

I hope this helps in your decission

Posted by Jason Espinoza on 1 January 2008 @ 8pm

I would highly recommend watching Razor after watching season 3, they will both be much more interesting that way.

Posted by John on 1 January 2008 @ 10pm

Okay folks…which is it? Before or after? And is there any clear idea about when season 3 will come out on DVD?

Posted by Jeffrey Kinart on 2 January 2008 @ 12am

watch season 2.5 then watch razor. point blank do it before anyone else advises you wrong again

Posted by LOL on 2 January 2008 @ 2am

I also left a 1 star protest review on amazon.com. I agree with the other post- if enough people complain, we might get the studio’s to release this title before the end of 2008.

Finally an answer to when Season 3 DVDs will be released. March 25th.

http://sev.prnewswire.com/entertainment/20080107/LAM17807012008-1.html

It’s going to give us poor suckers a mere few days to blast through that season before Season 4 starts airing.

Posted by Not a Toaster on 9 January 2008 @ 1am

Suckers is right! I think they are doing this on purpose. They must know how great the show is. How can they hold out on us like this. I think they are trying to drive up BSG DVD sales. Because why oh why oh why would they do a marathon of season 3 in MAY and not before the premiere of Season 4. Well, at least season 4 has been pushed to an April 4th premiere, last I read. So, yes us poor suckers will now have the chance to rush out and buy the DVD or rent it (if it’s available). I wouldn’t be a bit surprise if it’s not available to download until after the premiere of season 4.
